Helpdesk tasks

Reset Passwords, Issue Passes and Add Users

The changes a helpdesk makes every day, on the users you select. Each new password or pass is shown once, and never kept.

What you get

Reset password

Sets a new password, such as SilverOtterLamp27, and asks for a change at next sign-in unless you clear it.

Temporary Access Pass

Issues a pass within the tenant's policy, for the lifetime you choose or the policy's default, for 1 use unless you clear it.

Require re-register MFA

Removes the user's phone numbers, Authenticator apps and software tokens, so they register again at next sign-in.

New users

Add 1, many from a CSV file, or 1 like an existing member, copying their manager, groups and licences.

How it works

Select, run, then copy

  1. Select the users

Or none, for a new user.

  2. Choose the change

Check it in its window, then select Run.

  3. Copy the password

Copy it before you close the window: it's shown once.

Shown once, never kept

After a run, a window shows each new password or pass once, in the order of the users, with Copy.

  • Altivane doesn't keep it. It isn't in the change log, the Output pane or the diagnostic log.
  • A password you copy stays out of the clipboard history, and is cleared from the clipboard when you close the window.
  • New passwords are 3 common words and 2 digits, or 12 to 24 letters and digits. Neither has spaces, punctuation or the digits 0 and 1.
  • A pass replaces any pass the person has. Microsoft makes it, within the tenant's Temporary Access Pass policy.
  • Passwords, passes and new users are made only from the Users page, never in a workflow.

More for each user

The other changes a helpdesk reaches for.

  • Block sign-in, Allow sign-in, and Revoke sign-in sessions, which signs users out everywhere
  • Assign a licence and Remove a licence, chosen from the tenant's products with their free seats
  • Add to group and Remove from group, for security and Microsoft 365 groups
  • Set manager, Update profile and Set usage location
  • Delete user, and Restore a deleted user within 30 days
  • Resend a guest invitation to guests who haven't accepted
  • Copy group memberships and Copy a user's access, to give a new user's mailbox another user's distribution lists and mailbox access

With Helpdesk access, Altivane reads the tenant and makes the changes for users: sign-in, sessions, licences, groups, manager, new and deleted users, passwords and MFA methods. Mailbox changes need Manage. See Security.
